About Us
Who we are.
Umoja Leeds is a community-driven organisation dedicated to uniting, empowering and uplifting Swahili-speaking and other ethnic-minority communities across Leeds and beyond. “Umoja” means “unity” — and that’s exactly what we stand for. We create spaces for cultural exchange, mutual support and shared growth through events, outreach and everyday connection.

What drives us
Our mission, vision & the people we work with.
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: to bring people together. Whether you’re from Tanzania, Kenya, the DRC or any other Swahili-speaking nation, Umoja Leeds is here to make you feel at home. We preserve our cultural heritage, support our youth and promote collaboration across generations and backgrounds.
Our Vision
We envision a vibrant, connected and empowered Swahili-speaking community in Leeds that thrives socially, culturally and economically. A community where everyone feels they belong — and where culture is not just remembered, but lived and celebrated.
Who We Work With
Our work is made possible through partners including the United Republic of Tanzania, the High Commission of Tanzania in London, the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mjini 92.5 FM, JustFit, the NHS, Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Police.
What we do
Our work at a glance.
From youth engagement to health and wellbeing, our programmes are built around the real needs of our community — keeping people connected, supported and proud of who they are.

Youth Engagement & Crime Prevention
We work with local authorities and the police to run youth programmes that keep young people engaged and off the streets. Through sport, mentorship and positive role models, we help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in our neighbourhoods.
Support for People with Disabilities
We advocate for and support people with physical disabilities by ensuring our events are accessible and inclusive, and by connecting individuals with services and resources that improve quality of life and independence.
Autism & Neurodiversity Support
We create awareness about autism within our community and work to break the stigma. Our events and outreach are designed to be welcoming and mindful of people with autism and other additional needs — a safe, supportive space for everyone.
Cultural Events & Community Building
From football tournaments to cultural festivals, we bring people together to celebrate identity, share experiences and build lasting friendships.
Health & Wellbeing
In partnership with the NHS and health professionals, we promote mental and physical wellbeing through workshops, screenings and community education.
